Depth Filter V.S. Surface Filter

Depth filters use porous filtration media to retain particles throughout the media, rather than just on the surface of the medium.

The needle-punched felts typical depth filters. Needle Punched felts are composed of many fibers interwoven together. Fluid passes to the holes on fibers, those fibers intercept particles. As porous of fibers exist inside the felt media, particles are held inside the media. So we called it depth filters.

Depth filters are commonly used when the fluid to be filtered a high load of particles. Due to the thickness of the media, it can retain a large mass of particles before becoming clogged.

Needle felt – depth filter

Surface filter is just like shown in literal meaning. The media intercept particles on the media surface.

Mesh Monofilament filter media is typically surface filter. Mesh Monofilament is only one layer, particles more extensive than the holes will not pass the spot but be “filtered.”

We choose Depth filter or Surface filter according to the type of fluid, such as Particle concentration, liquid viscosity, chemical properties of liquid itself.
